As we lose our common sense
Pat Sajak, long-time host of the beloved game show “Wheel of Fortune,” has gotten himself into some hot water yet again for a comment he made on his Twitter account about the state of American culture under President Barack Obama.
According to Sajak, Americans, and consequently the contestants who appear on his game show, are becoming so ignorant of America’s traditions and culture that the show’s producers are having a hard time coming up with puzzles that are fair to everyone.
“As we lose our common culture, one odd side effect: it’s harder to find puzzles on Wheel that are fair to all,” Sajak tweeted out on June 1.
Sajak is no stranger to the kind of ire this comment has drawn from liberals as he has often taken to Twitter to vent his frustrations over what he sees as the decline of American culture (H/T Right Wing News).
In “The Screwtape Letters,” author C.S. Lewis warned of what would happen when a society embraces the false “diabolical” definition of democracy that people take to mean, “I am as good as you.”
Lewis wrote, “For ‘democracy’ or the ‘democratic spirit’ (diabolical sense) leads to a nation without great men, a nation mainly of subliterates, full of the cocksureness which flattery breeds on ignorance, and quick to snarl or whimper at the first sign of criticism. And that is what Hell wishes every democratic people to be … “
It would appear they’re coming closer to getting their wish.
